Merit Badge Procedures

General procedure for Scout initiated MB includes:
1.1.  Initiate Discussion and Approval: Discuss Merit Badge with Scoutmaster (Jeff Burdick) or Assistant Scoutmaster (Ted Dennison, or Gordon Start). These discussions include appropriateness, basic plan, and schedule. A MB Counselor is also required at this time.

2.2.  Obtain MB Card: After approval, a MB “card” is obtained and signed by the Scoutmaster. It is important at this step to make sure the MB is recorded in the Database. The Database is maintained by Gary Gilbreath and is indispensable for helping keep Scouts on track towards their MB.

3.3.  Work on the MB: The Scout works with the MB Counselor on the MB as normal. Scouts are encouraged, but not required, to keep the Database current. A current Database helps the SM and ASMs monitor progress and determine if any discussions are needed.

4.4.  Progress Checks: Periodically, the SM and ASMs will review progress on MBs. These reviews may lead to discussions about current progress, future schedule, and plans for completion. The Database is used to judge progress. Scouts are encouraged to set dates for their progress and review these with both their MB Counselors.

5.5.  Merit Badge Completed: The completed MB is reviewed by the SM or an ASM. Any questions or comments are addressed at this time. The completed MB card is then sighed by the SM.

6.6.  Merit Badge Processing: After review, the Scoutmaster signed MB card is passed to the Advancement Chairman for processing.

Summer/Winter Camp

Camp Merit Badges are usually submitted as a group before camp. The general procedures are:
1.1.  Merit Badge Selection: The Scout makes MB selections and submits these selections to the coordinator for the camp.

2.2.  Scoutmaster Review: The SM will review the Merit Badge selections and any questions or comments are discussed with the Scout.

3.3.  Camp Application: Merit Badge selections submitted to Summer/Winter Camp.
4.4.  Post Camp: After camp, Merit Badges (completions and partials) are reviewed by the SM and camp coordinator.

5.5.  Merit Badges Completed: Completed MBs are passed to the Advancement Chairman for processing.

6.6.  Partial Merit Badges: Partial MBs are entered in the Database and completion plans discussed with each Scout.

Merit Badge Fairs and other inter-Troop MB events

The process for Merit Badge Fair and other inter-Troop MB events is similar to Summer/Winter Camp. The general procedures are:

1.1.  Merit Badge Selection: The Scout makes MB selections and submits these selections to the Troop Merit Badge Fair coordinator.

2.2.  Scoutmaster Review: The SM will review the Merit Badge selections and any questions or comments are discussed with the Scout.

3.3.  Merit Badge Fair Application: Merit Badge selections are submitted to the Merit Badge Fair.

4.4.  Post Merit Badge Fair: After Merit Badge Fair, Merit Badges (completions and partials) are reviewed by the SM and Troop Merit Badge Fair coordinator.

5.5.  Merit Badges Completed: Completed MBs are passed to the Advancement Chairman for processing.

6.6.  Partial Merit Badges: Partial MBs are entered in the Database and completion plans discussed with each Scout.
